UNDP Administrator: Donors will consider helping recover losses sustained during floods

“Next year, Moldova can face again floods. Thus, the Government must react promptly,” UNDP Administrator Helen Clark said in a press briefing held jointly with Prime Minister Vlad Filat in Chisinau on September 10, Info-Prim Neo reports. The statements were made after presenting the report on the damage caused by the floods to European organizations and diplomats working in Moldova. “I praise the Government of Moldova for gathering together all the important players, with whom we decided what recovery method after floods to use and what measures will be taken if such natural disasters repeat,” said Helen Clark. She also said that the Government of Moldova should improve the capacity to react to calamities and optimize the weather forecasting system. “About US$77 million is needed to recover the losses caused by floods. Approximately 30% of this sum will be necessary in the near future. The donors will consider methods of helping recover these losses,” said the UNDP Administrator. Premier Vlad Filat said the assessment report outlines the steps that the Government must take to improve the ability to prevent and effectively respond to natural disasters. “The floods caused direct damage estimated at US$42 million. We need about US$77 million to adjust the entire infrastructure by the middle of 2012,” Vlad Filat said. “Moldova cannot cover this sum by itself. Therefore, we need our development partners’ support.” About 3,000 of persons remained without home as a result of this summer’s floods. There were damaged over 6 hectares of farmland, seven bridges and 17 levees.
