To underline the strength shown by women and girls, the message of UN Moldova on the occasion of International Women’s Day and the flagship campaign is “I decide. It’s time for equality”. The message is aligned with the priority theme of the 65th session of the Commission on the Status of Women titled “Women’s full and effective participation and decision-making in public life, as well as the elimination of violence, for achieving gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls”. The message will be transmitted through the activities that will be staged by UN in Moldova during March 1-15, IPN reports, quoting a press release of UN Moldova.
The theme for International Women’s Day, 8 March 2021, announced by UN Women, is: “Women in leadership: Achieving an equal future in a COVID-19 world”. The theme celebrates the tremendous efforts by women and girls around the world in shaping a more equal future and recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Gender equality is at the core of the basic human rights and remains a priority for the United Nations. The crisis has highlighted both the centrality of their contributions and the disproportionate burdens that women carry. On International Women’s Day and not only, we should combine efforts and struggle for a world in which gender equality prevails,” said Simon Springett, UN Resident Coordinator in Moldova.
“Good governance and democracy necessitate equal and inclusive representation in all the decision-making processes. When more women are in leadership, different voices are heard and a different kind of solutions are identified. The year 2021 is an important opportunity for increasing the representation of women and girls as COVID-19 obliges us to rethink the way in which our society works,” stated UN Women Representatives to Moldova Dominika Stojanoska.
On the eve of International Women’s Day, a series of online events titled “Gender Debates Café” will be launched. Female leaders from different areas of activity will be invited to a dialogue on the women’s right to take decisions in all the spheres of life. There will be circulated online informative materials that will underline the importance of women and girls holding positions of leaders.
The UN Agencies will present success stories so as to inspire other women to fulfill their dreams and to fight for their rights, data about the women’s participation in the electoral process and studies why women gain less than men, etc. The goal of these activities is to raise the awareness of men and women to the necessity of knowing and claiming the women’s rights and of helping them be in leadership at the workplace, in society, in the family.
