UN Council discusses human rights in Transnistria

The precarious human rights situation in the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova has been brought to the attention of the international community, in particular the cases of illegal detention and numerous serious violations committed in the region. The subject was raised by Minister Mihai Popsoi during the 58th session of the UN Human Rights Council, IPN reports.

According to the Foreign Ministry in Chisinau, the dignitary noted that the issue of the execution of the ECHR judgments on cases of human rights violations, including in the Transnistrian region, will be one of the country's priorities also during the chairmanship of the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe, expected to last from November 2025 to May 2026.

Mihai Popsoi confirmed the solidarity with the Ukrainian people and the necessary support to the refugees on the territory of the Republic of Moldova. According to the Minister, a sustainable solution to the war must be reached in accordance with the UN Charter, with justice being established only through a robust accountability mechanism for war crimes and the prevention of a new war through solid security guarantees, along with charting the course for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

In his address, the Moldovan minister promoted our country's candidacy for a new membership in the ODC for the period 2027-2029, among the objectives of which will be the promotion of human rights as the foundation of a just and just world, regardless of geographical area. In this context, the official reaffirmed the country's support for the efforts of the Human Rights Council and the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in promoting and protecting human rights.

The UN Human Rights Council (HRC) is a permanent subsidiary body of the General Assembly of the United Nations, established by General Assembly Resolution adopted on March 15, 2006. The HRC started its work on June 19, 2006, with its seat in Geneva and is composed of 47 voting member states.

The Republic of Moldova has submitted its candidacy for a new term of office in the ODO for the period 2027-2029. The first ODO mandate was held from June 2010 to June 2013.
