Two solar trees donated by the United Nations Development Program have been installed in Chisinau on Mircea cel Batran Boulevard and Grigore Vieru Boulevard, reports IPN.
The trees will produce electricity by capturing solar energy. The energy stored in the batteries in the tree trunk will be used by citizens to charge mobile phones, tablets, laptops, electric bicycles, etc. At the same time, the accumulated energy will be used during the nighttime for lighting the space. Each tree will have five standard power outlets and five USB outlets.
The donated 4sSolar trees can generate 800 KW of electricity per day from renewable sources.
Nicolae Balaur, head of Râşcani sector, said that the trees are environmentally friendly. A company will provide free internet in that area, and a drinking fountain will also be installed.
Alexandru Rotaru, UNDP project manager, said that the trees are brought from Croatia and will be assembled by the manufacturing company. Such a tree costs about 25,000 dollars.
The installation of solar trees is a regional project of the United Nations Development Program, and the capital cities of Serbia, Tajikistan, Georgia and the Republic of Moldova will benefit from it.
