The police said two more persons suspected of forming part of the large-scale credit card fraud were arrested. Investigations show the suspects performed transactions to convert digital currencies “Bitcoin” and “Litecoin” to the value of 2 million lei in the course of last year and at the start of this year, IPN reports.
The Chisinau Police Division said that as a result of five searches carried out at the homes and in the cars of suspects, there were found and seized sums of money totaling 560,000 lei. There were also confiscated two cars that belonged to the suspects.
The men were remanded in custody for 30 days.
A month ago, the police said 12 persons suspected of having stolen money from people’s credit cards were arrested. Two of the suspects, who were allegedly the organizers, are serving time in jail, while another suspect holds an administrative post at a penitentiary in Moldova. Fire more persons were arrested later. In parallel, searches were conducted at a number of jails and more persons were detained, while a number of detainees were transferred to other prisons. Among those arrested is a deputy head of the National Administration of Penitentiaries.
