“A Transnistrian referendum is organized in the same way as it was organized by Al Capone. (Al Capone is America's best known gangster, who headed gangs of criminals in 1920s), when he questioned Illinois residents about his actions”, declared Mark A. Meyer, chairman of the European Affair Committee from New York, at the conference “Unfreezing a frozen conflict: aspects of the Transnistrian separatist crisis”, which has taken place, Tuesday, July 18, in Chisinau. Meyer has also stated that the referendum from Nistru`s left side has no legal grounds, being a false effort in the existing Transnistrian atmosphere. Referring to the recent declaration of some Russian authorities supporting the action and recognition of low classes, the cited source said that this action is “over the limits” and is a failure. At the same time, the Minister of Reintegration, Vasile Sova, declared that according to the political agreement with the Russian Federation, it has no right to maintain such actions. “The actual situation is not simple”, stated the minister, referring to the existence of some Russian forces that can use for their own benefit economical resources from Transnistria. Transnistrian authorities also announced that a referendum will take place on September 17. The purpose of such a plebiscite would be to question the residents regarding “the development of priority relationship with the Russian Federation”, and also “the possible existence of rmn in the frames of Moldova”. The authorities from Chisinau, as well as authorities from other states declared that the results of such a plebiscite would be void.
