Transnistrian conflict can be settled exclusively peacefully, Nicolae Timofti
The efficient diplomacy will help Moldova quicker resolve the Transnistrian dispute. The conflict can be settled exclusively peacefully, at the negotiating table, with the help of the partners involved in the “5+2” talks, said the newly elected President Nicolae Timofti, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“Two weeks ago, it was 20 years of the start of the bloody Nistru armed conflict, which took hundreds of human lives and remained like an open wound on the body of our country. Even if a lot of work was done during the last two decades, especially over the last few years, Moldova remains a territorially divided state that does not control its whole territory and cannot manage all its borders,” stated Nicolae Timofti.
He welcomed the resumption of the official talks in the 5+2 format after a pause of almost 6 years as an efficient instrument for settling the Transnistrian dispute. “As head of state, I will support all the steps aimed at building confidence between the two banks of the Nistru, creating common economic, humanitarian, social and other kinds of areas as obligatory preconditions for later implementing the solution identified at the negotiating table,” said the President.
He also said that the Transnistrian conflict must be settled exclusively in accordance with the Constitution of Moldova, which guarantees the unitary, undividable, sovereign and independent character of the state. The status of neutrality should be also observed and effort should be made to replace the current peacekeeping mission in the Security Zone with an internationally-mandated civil one.
Nicolae Timofti was elected President of Moldova on March 16.
