Tiraspol rejects Chisinau's assistance in gas procurement, said Ministry of Energy

All mechanisms proposed to the energy enterprises on the left bank of the Nistru River—Tiraspoltransgaz and MGRES—are fully operational and could immediately address the region's gas and electricity shortages. This was stated by Constantin Borosan, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy, who clarified that the assistance offered thus far has been rejected by the Transnistrian side. Despite this, he reiterated the Ministry's willingness to provide expertise and support in the energy sector, IPN reports.

Constantin Borosan highlighted that several meetings were organized at the Ministry of Energy's platform with energy enterprises, including those on the left bank of the Nistru River. During a meeting on December 11, it was agreed that Tiraspoltransgaz should explore the possibility of purchasing gas from the BRM exchange as an alternative in case Gazprom halts deliveries.

According to Borosan, "Moldovagaz, Tiraspoltransgaz’s parent company, has extensive experience with BRM exchange transactions and shared this knowledge with Tiraspoltransgaz. In October, Tiraspoltransgaz representatives visited BRM headquarters to understand the trading process. BRM is a viable and real tool that enables gas purchases almost instantly. However, this mechanism has been ignored so far".

He also mentioned that during a meeting on December 20, the possibility of processing gas purchased by Energocom into electricity at MGRES was discussed. Technically, it is feasible to transport gas to the power plant. Energocom sent MGRES a draft agreement and electricity consumption schedules, with the understanding that MGRES would review the proposal and provide feedback soon.

"As of today, there has been no response", Borosan stated, adding that running the power plant on gas would have provided greater stability and reliability to the energy system. Producing electricity at MGRES using natural gas, including for the left bank's needs, could have avoided the rolling blackouts currently affecting the Transnistrian region.

On December 31, 2024, Moldovagaz and Energocom conducted a test gas purchase via the Balkan Gas Hub in Bulgaria, transporting the gas through the Trans-Balkan pipeline to Moldova. On January 2, Moldovagaz sent a letter to Tiraspoltransgaz, offering technical and commercial support in collaboration with Energocom for organizing gas procurement to meet Tiraspoltransgaz's needs. On the same day, Tiraspoltransgaz rejected this proposal for cooperation.

"We remain open to providing our expertise and knowledge through our energy companies to manage the current situation effectively", assured Constantin Borosan, State Secretary at the Ministry of Energy.
