Tiraspol declares state of emergency in the economy for 30-day period

Tiraspol decided to declare a state of emergency in the economy for a period of 30 days. The so-called supreme soviet on the left bank of the Nistru River approved the "order" issued by the leader of the Transnistrian administration Vadim Krasnoselsky, IPN reports.

The Transnistrian administration argues it is taking measures due to a possible reduction or cessation of natural gas supplies to the region starting with January 1, 2025.

Krasnoselsky’s "order" states that in the event of a negative scenario in the energy sector, a set of measures must be designed and implemented in time. Among them are the rationing of natural gas consumption, creation of a state reserve of energy resources, prohibition of the export of energy resources, except for electricity. The exception applies as long as natural gas is supplied to the region.

On Wednesday, the Government in Chisinau also approved a draft decision proposing declaring a state of emergency on the territory of the Republic of Moldova, starting with December 16. Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said that about 300,000 Moldovan citizens live in the Transnistrian region and they risk facing an unprecedented situation, when they can be left without gas and electricity in the middle of winter.

"The available legal instruments and the powers of the Commission for Emergency Situations in this context are not enough to overcome the emergency situation if Gazprom stops natural gas supplies to the Transnistrian region of the Republic of Moldova," noted the official.
