The Tarmac of August 31, 1989. CNMI approved the project

The National Council of Historic Monuments has endorsed the project proposed by the municipality to repair the portion of the August 31, 1989 stretch of road in the center of the capital, where a historic cobblestone was discovered, IPN reports.

"Much has already been discussed on this project and at the sketch level. There have also been meetings where there have been proposals for improvement and I think we have reached a stage when we can approve it," Culture Ministry State Secretary Vladimir Vornic told the CNMI meeting.

Vladimir Vornic told IPN that the stretch between Alexandr Pushkin and Metropolitan Gavriil Bannulescu-Bodoni streets is to be properly preserved and rehabilitated to preserve that old and historic cobblestone.

"Even the missing portions, the people from the City Hall mentioned that they have collected stone, proper pieces of stone, which will be worked with to repair this portion," Vornic said.

The municipality informs that as soon as the notice is received, the tender procedures will proceed.

"We are about to receive the properly approved project, after which the tenders will be organized," said Ilie Ceban, deputy mayor of the capital.

August 31, 1989 Street went under capital repair in early April 2022, and will be fully reopened for traffic by the end of 2023, except for the section between Alexandr Pushkin and Mitropolit Gavriil Banulescu-Bodoni streets. During the works, in March 2023, an old cobble dating back to the 19th century was discovered. This discovery aroused the interest of the authorities and heritage specialists, leading to the temporary halt of the works for evaluation and historical documentation. The area was preserved until a solution for its valorization could be found.
