Last weekend’s heavy rain caused havoc in the districts of Cimislia, Anenii Noi, Hancesti and in Chisinau municipality. Villagers needed the assistance of rescuers to have water pumped out of yards, basements and event homes. As a result of the meteorological conditions, Moldova’s Railways suspended the local train routes on May 14, IPN reports.
An exceptional meeting of the commission for emergencies was convoked in connection with the weather in the morning of May 14. According to the information provided by the Civil Protection and Emergencies Service, the heavy rain affected a number of settlements, with the districts of Anenii Noi, Ialoveni, Cimislia and Chisinau municipality being the worst hit. Emergency response teams managed to unblock the access ways to all the affected communities. No casualties were reported.
Eight settlements in Nisporeni, Straseni, Anenii Noi, Causeni and Taraclia districts and in the ATU Gagauzia were partially disconnected from the power supply. According to the latest reports, the power supply was fully restored.
Prime Minister Pavel Filip instructed the Ministry of Economy to ask for information from power suppliers about their intervention capacities in emergencies related to natural disasters. He also requested that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industry should assess the extent of damage caused by the late April snowfall and the recent rain in agriculture so as to identify assistance possibilities.
The representatives of the Ministry of Transport and Road Infrastructure said that after the necessary examinations are performed, the railway routes will be restored, while officials of the Ministry of Environment said southern and central Moldova were the worst affected, but the levees weren’t damaged and the ponds didn’t flood, the situation being under control.
