Teachers threaten with general strike before Baccalaureate exams

The teachers no longer hold negotiations with the authorities. They demand increasing salaries by 50% or they will go on general strike right before the Baccalaureate exams. Members of the Education and Science Trade Union Friday mounted a protest in the square of the National Opera House, after picketing the Government Building for three days, IPN reports.

The teachers demand that their pays, the bonuses for holders of scientific degrees and the scholarships be raised and that concessions be provided for young specialists. The members of the Education and Science Trade Union accused the government of asking for quality in the education system without stimulating the teachers.

Being present at the protest, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca told the protesters that the Government is making effort to obtain economic growth and to improve the social conditions. He called on the teachers to be patient and to be responsible now at the end of the academic year. He promised that the executive will find the necessary financial resources for the people to feel protected and safe in Moldova.

Many of the protesters didn’t believe the promises made by the authorities and said that only a general strike can help them obtain higher salaries as soon as possible.
