A taxi driver from Chisinau was sentenced to six years in jail for hitting by his car two pedestrians in a crosswalk.

Last May, the 37-year-old man struck a woman who was crossing the street by the crosswalk, holding her grandson aged five in her arms. The woman suffered multiple fractures, while the child sustained an open head injury and a concussion and went into a coma. The accident happened before the eyes of the child’s mother, who was several meters away.

The child is still in a coma and needs to be operated. Such a surgery is performed abroad and is rather costly.

The sentence can be appealed to a higher court.
