“Tarna Romˮ suggests solutions for integrating Roma refugees from Ukraine into society

The organization “Tarna Romˮ calls on the authorities of Moldova to create conditions for the Roma people who fled from the war in Ukraine to be able to integrate into society, especially together with the closure of the placement centers. According to the organization’s director general Marin Alla, a solution is to distribute social housing to Roma people who live in Moldova and to those who came from Ukraine after their homes there were destroyed, IPN reports.

In a news conference, Marin Alla said the efforts to transform district spaces that are owned by the local public administration, kindergartens that are not repaired, public spaces left to ruin and other spaces into social houses for vulnerable people from the locality and for Roma communities who fled from Ukraine can facilitate the integration of the Roma refugees in Moldova.

Another recommendation is to extend the work of temporary placement centers. As the Government does not have capacities to maintain these centers, possibilities should be identified by the international partners for these centers to work as long as possible. Another proposal is for Moldova, together with other partners, to offer social guarantees to Roma refugees from Ukraine who do not have where to return so that this category of people has confidence in the Republic of Moldova.

“The state and the international partners should see how they can further contribute to facilitating decent and free living on the territory of the Republic of Moldova of all the refugees, regardless of their nationality,” said the director general of “Tarna Romˮ.

Marin Alla noted that when the authorities become actively involved to look for solutions to integrate the Roma refugees from Ukraine into society, solutions will appear. The non-involvement, delay, abandonment of these subjects can lead to the appearance of excluded, marginalized citizens whose rights guaranteed by European conventions signed by Moldova are not respected. Education and employment are the key to success for growing a new generation of Romanies in communities in Moldova and this refers also to the Roma refugees from Ukraine.
