Tantareni landfill doesn’t pollute environment, study

Soil samples from Tantareni village, Anenii-Noi district, don’t have any excess of soluble salts, nitrates or ammonium and the pH varies between neutral and slightly alkaline. These are the results published by the Center for Ecological Investigations (CIE) of the State Ecological Inspectorate, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to information revealed at a press conference, the samples of groundwater confirm the lack of any decrease in the quality of water. The investigations were carried out after the protests of the people in Tantareni, who complained that the landfill in the locality polluted the environment. According to a press release from the Ministry of Environment, the landfill operator maintains the sanitary situation of the territory, ensures the cleaning of rainwater drainage channels and verifies that the insulated strata are respected permanently in order to avoid the self-incineration of waste. The responsibility for managing solid household waste belongs to the local public administrations that should ensure, through their own means or through clean-up services, the collecting, transport, treatment, harnessing and disposal of such waste. The amount of household waste collected in Chisinau is of 4300 cube meters per day. The landfill in Tantareni village has been exploited since 1990. According to the execution project, the landfill’s capacity for burying solid household waste is 44.2 million m3. Since the beginning of the exploitation of the landfill until January 8, 2011, only 19 million m3 have been stored, which is less than 50% of the planned capacity. After the locals’ protests, the waste from Chisinau has been stored in other landfills.
