Support measures for farmers affected by drought

The Cabinet approved support measures for the farmers affected by drought. These include the legal suspension of payment obligations towards creditors for a period of six months. Also, the obligation to pay the outstanding debts to creditors through negotiation between the parties will be restructured, rescheduled or, as the case may be, suspended. Also, the financial guarantees issued by the credit guarantee institutions – the Organization for the Development of Entrepreneurship – will be extended, IPN reports.

Deputy Prime Minister Vladimir Bolea, Minister of Agriculture and Food Industry, said that these are temporary support measures applying to farmers who raised loans, obtained goods or inputs used for agricultural activities and whose agricultural crops were affected by the 2024 drought in a proportion of at least 60%, and the affected cultivated area constitutes no less than 50%.

“The goal is to provide immediate support to the affected farmers, to stabilize the financial situation and maintain their ability to pay, but also to ensure the viability and continuity of agricultural businesses,” said Vladimir Bolea.

“It is noteworthy that this is a new legislative mechanism, which did not exist before, to support our farmers who, due to the drought and extreme heat, are unable to honor their financial obligations. This mechanism is to be used in the immediate future, but also possibly in the future,” stated Prime Minister Dorin Recean.

The draft law is to be adopted by Parliament.
