Sugar is the only food product that got cheaper in the last 12 months, contrary to the press reports about an alleged increase in the price of sugar, said the Union of Sugar Producers of Moldova. According to official data from the National Bureau of Statistics, the price of sugar declined by 2% last year, while average consumer prices grew by 9.1%.
The sugar producers' clarification comes after press reported that the products of the local confectionery factory "Bucuria" will get more expensive following an increase in sugar and cocoa prices. Mold-Street reported that the prices of some types of "Bucuria" chocolate rose by about 30%.
The Union of Sugar Producers pointed out that not only the consumer price of sugar, but also the selling price for industrial producers decreased. According to them, two years ago the sugar was sold to them for 20.5 lei per kilogram, but currently the price is 15.5 lei per kilogram, which is a decrease of 24%.
Asked by IPN to confirm or refute the given press reports, representatives of "Bucuria" company did not come back with details by the time the news item was published.
