The suspended Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo has been released from judicial supervision as the Chisinau/Ciocana Court rejected the prosecution’s request to extend the non-custodial pretrial measure for another 60 days.
Prosecutors said they will appeal the ruling.
Stoianoglo was arrested in October 2021 before being released on bail pending trial.
Prosecutors have so far completed proceedings on one of the charges against Stoianoglo, the one where the suspended Prosecutor General is accused of illegally authorizing a 163,900 lei severance pay to prosecutor Nicolae Chitoroagă, despite the latter being under criminal investigation at the time.
Stoianoglo also faces charges of abuse of office, passive corruption, perjury and facilitation of a criminal group. Intending to plead not guilty and claiming the case against him is politically motivated, he has lodged two complaints with the European Court of Human Rights alleging multiple violations.
