“Immediately after taking office as President, I will take a set of actions to stop the exodus of citizens abroad,” promises presidential candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo, who is supported by the Party of Socialists. “Moldova is dying and this can be seen with the naked eye. Go to every village and you will see deserted, abandoned houses, entire streets where no one lives anymore,” the candidate said at a press briefing, IPN reports.
According to Alexandr Stoianoglo, Moldova is currently on the first place in Europe by the level of depopulation. “During the years of Independence, we lost, according to reports, about a third of the population. At the same time, other data indicate that the decrease in the population is of about 40%. Out of 4.3 million people who lived in Moldova at the beginning of the 1990s, only 2.6 million remained in the country. The depopulation is mainly due to the massive exodus, which has gained momentum, especially in recent years. Official data show that in recent years alone, more than 204,000 citizens have left Moldova for good,” said the candidate supported by the PSRM.
Alexandr Stoianoglo also referred to “other data”, without specifying the source, noting that they show that the number of those who left in recent years exceeded 300,000 people. “It is especially serious that young people are leaving the country en masse. In 2023 alone, the number of young people in the Republic of Moldova decreased by almost 40,000 or 6.5%. It is also serious that the number of deaths exceeds considerably the number of births. In 2023, the difference was 9,700 people,” said the presidential candidate.
Stoianoglo also said that, as soon as he takes over as President, all the state’s decisions – social, educational, health, economic, as regards the attraction of investments, European modernization – will be assessed primarily through the impact on demographic growth and recovery.
According to Alexandr Stoianoglo, in order to restore the country’s demographic potential, the following will be needed: a program to encourage the birth rate, financial support for families, modernization of the entire infrastructure for children – from kindergartens and schools to development centers, establishment of a state investment bank, a new housing program, improvement of the quality of medical services and environmental standard, etc. The candidate stressed that stopping the demographic decline will the first step towards saving the country and he is convinced that he will be able to achieve this goal.
