Statistics of second round of voting in last nine mayoral elections in Chisinau

In the last nine elections, the mayoralty of Chisinau was several times won as a result of serious battles in second round of voting. The election specialists and the general public can use the archive of the independent news agency Info-Prim Neo and the municipal news agency Info-Prim as a starting point for analyses and conclusions. [June 5, 2011] The first round was held on June 5, 2011. The candidate for mayor of Chisinau of the Communist Party (PCRM) Igor Dodon surpassed the candidate of the Liberal Party (PL) Dorin Chirtoaca: 48.07%: 46.51%. [June 19, 2011] The second round of voting took place on June 19, 2011. According to the preliminary results, Dorin Chirtoaca won 50.60% of the vote, while his opponent Igor Dodon – 49.40%. [June 3, 2007] In the first round of voting on June 3, 2007, the PCRM’s candidate for mayor general of Chisinau municipality Veaceslav Iordan polled 27.66% of the vote, while his Liberal opponent Dorin Chirtoaca – 24.38%. [June 17, 2007] In the second round of voting on June 17, 2007, the PCRM’s candidate Veaceslav Iordan obtained 38.83% of the vote, while the PL’s candidate Dorin Chirtoaca – 61.17%. [July 10, 2005] The mayoral elections of July 10, 2005 were declared invalid owing to a record low turnout of voters – only 26.9% of the voters written in the electoral registers. More than a half of the valid votes (50.15%) were won by the candidate of the then ruling party (PCRM) Zinaida Greceanyi. Independent candidate Dumitru Braghis earned 20.65% of the poll, while the PL’s candidate Dorin Chirtoaca – 7.13%. The post of mayor of Chisinau remained vacant on April 18, 2005, after Serafim Urecheanu abandoned this position and took the seat of MP. The elections were rerun in two weeks. [July 24, 2005] The Central Election Commission invalidated the results of the rerun mayoral elections of July 24, 2005 because the turnout was less than one third of the voters – 19.8%. The PCRM’s candidate Zinaida Greceanyi polled most of the votes. Under the Election Code, the Commission announced new elections. [November 27, 2005] The new mayoral elections in the municipality of Chisinau of November 27, 2005 were again invalidated as only 22.21% of the voters took part in them. This is about two thirds of the turnout needed for the elections to be validated. If the elections in Chisinau municipality had been declared valid, independent candidate Vasile Ursu and the PL’s candidate Dorin Chirtoaca would have competed in the second round of voting. Vasile Ursu polled 46.66% of the vote, while Dorin Chirtoaca – 25.14%. [May 25, 2003] In the first round of voting on May 25, independent candidate Serafim Urecheanu earned 44.5% of the vote, while the PCRM’s candidate Vasile Zgardan – 40.6%. [June 8, 2003] The second round of elections took place on June 8, 2003. Serafim Urecheanu polled 53.9% of the ballot, while his opponent Vasile Zgardan – 46.1%.
