Stable population of Moldova is 3.58 mln people
The National Statistics Bureau (NSB) finds that the stable population of the Republic of Moldova constitutes circa 3.58 mln people, 1.87 mln females and 1.71 mln males.
Rural population count reveals a figure of 2.12 mln, and 1.46 mln live in Moldova’s urban regions. Inhabitants aged 0-14 total to circa 656,000 children; aged 15-29 – about 1 mln citizens; 30-59 – approximately 1.45 mln citizens, and 59-88 year-old – 459.4 thousand. Population aged above 85 constitutes 15.5 thousand persons.
According to data provided by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), almost 600.000 Moldovans left the country to find a job. The mean age of migrants is 35.
The report “State of World Population 2006” conducted by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) highlights that the R. Moldova lacks an authorized institution which would manage and analyze demographic data and draw up policies based on these figures.
According to the report, there is need for a specialized institution in the field or for a National Commission for Population and Development, with primary responsibilities in drafting policies on the issue. Although 2 censuses were conducted in Moldova over the last 15 years, no demographic projects came out subsequently, and migration trends weren’t taken into account.
The report also highlights that Moldova faces numerous demographic problems with impact on economics, society, and politics.
