Splits and coalitions between parties can influence election outcome

The splits inside some of the parties and the coalitions formed by other parties can influence the choice of voters in constituency No. 38 Hâncești at the new parliamentary elections of March 15, 2020. The behavior of parties in the public sphere is a crucial element, as is the performance of candidates. To provide a broader picture of the political and electoral contexts before the elections, information of public interest was published on the portal alegeri.md (that was launched by the Association for Participatory Democracy ADEPT under the aegis of the Civic Coalition for Free and Fair Elections).

In a news conference at IPN,  ADEPT executive director Igor Boțan said they assessed the organizational and administrative potential of parties. As in the electoral event of last autumn, the organizational factor of political parties asserted itself fully in the process of choosing and registering candidates for the new parliamentary elections that will be held in constituency No. 38. However, there are a number of agents that can influence the results of the March 15 elections and these include the performance of candidates and of parties in the public sphere, such as splits, coalitions and others.

Seven candidates are running in the new parliamentary elections in single-member constituency No. 38 Hâncești. In the February 24, 2019 elections, there were four candidates running in this constituency. According to the ADEPT director, the increased interest in the March 15 elections shows that these are regarded as an exercise before the presidential elections.

“If we treat the elections in constituency No. 38 as a kind of prelude, a micro-ground for testing tactics, we can only furnish the parties, public opinion with information about what is going on, if things stand in a particular way, if the parties split or unite. We will see the effects of these moves within parties through the angle of the results that will be obtained in the March 15 elections. After March 15, the time will be opportune for summing up and formulating conclusions. And those conclusions will be probably useful to the political forces and probably to the voters in the Republic of Moldova,” stated Igor Boțan.

On alegeri.md, one can find electoral news, bibliographical data of registered candidates, property and personal interests statements, electoral offers and press statements of these. Also, on the election day, on March 15, 2020, www.alegeri.md will provide information about the voter turnout, the results obtained by each candidate when the polling stations close and election campaign monitoring reports.
