Socialist People’s Party pleads for holding referendum in May
The Socialist People’s Party considers the head of state should be elected by the people and demands that the parliamentary parties should support the organization of a referendum on the topic in May, Info-Prim Neo reports.
“We are convinced that the MPs, judges of the Constitutional Court, the supporters of democracy for overcoming the political crisis that has lasted for over two years and a half will base their actions on the Constitution, which says that the national sovereignty belongs to the Moldovan people, not to impotent lawmakers who cannot elect the head of state,” the party’s leader Victor Stepaniuc said in a news conference.
According to Victor Stepaniuc, the legislature should be dissolved and new elections should be held in April. Otherwise, the Socialist People’s Party will mount protests. “We will not join the protests staged by the Committee for Defending the Constitution headed by Rosca, as some of their goals are not clear,” he stated.
A constitutional referendum on the election of the head of state by direct vote was held in September 2010, but wasn’t validated owing to the low turnout of voters. Under the legislation, one and the same issue can be put up for referendum once in two years. Victor Stepaniuc said this provision can be modified as the Constitution does not impose restrictions in this respect.
The Socialist People’s Party of Moldova was registered on January 16. It has about 5,000 members, according to the constitution documents.
