Snap elections and PDM-PSRM coalition are most probable scenarios, experts

Snap parliamentary elections and a coalition between the Democratic Party and the Party of Socialists are the most probable scenarios. At the same time, if such a coalition is formed, it is not known which of the parties would be ready to make concessions, political pundits were quoted by IPN as saying in the talk show “Emphasis on today” on TVR Moldova channel.

Political expert Victor Ciobanu said the chances are 50:50. A government coalition could be formed between the PDM and the PSRM as the two parties identified some common points, the social ones. In reality, the divergent points are related not to the foreign policy, but rather to the division of posts in an eventual Government. The other 50% are for snap elections and there could be two variants of such elections: snap elections in the current conditions and snap elections in new conditions agreed by the bloc ACUM and the PSRM.

“What happened today to ACUM is a consequence of the fact that they do not clearly formulate particular things . They should have said it clearly: we invite the Socialists to discuss the following – we either run alone in snap elections and do not form government coalitions or we stick to the package of laws we proposed,” stated the expert.

Expert in political sciences Igor Volnitski said such a coalition cannot secure more than 30% of the support of MPs. As long as the Democratic Party has, at least theoretically, the chance of exercising power itself, it will profit from any variant to remain in power alone. “It won’t be too hard for the PDM to secure a comfortable majority as this party already has experience in this regard,” he stated.

According to the expert, it will be very painful for the PDM to concede the post of Parliament Speaker or that of Premier. “In such a case, they would move to the second place in the management of state affairs and this is not typical of this party,” noted the politologist. Igor Volnitski said there are bigger chances of holding snap elections or of forming a majority by the model of 2016.

Ex-MP Mihai Godea said it is hard for him to believe that the PDM will accept the ideology of the PSRM. If they decide to form a coalition, the Socialists will accept the conditions of the Democrats. “The PDM devoured all its partners and by this alliance the PSRM should prepare for something similar,” he stated. Mihai Godea expressed his skepticism about the creation of a majority coalition, saying a minority government or snap elections are more probable.

Discussions between President Igor Dodon and the leaders of the PSRM and PDM were held on April 2 on the initiative of the President. The co-presidents of the bloc ACUM were also invited to discussions, but they refused to come.
