The Social Liberal Party (SLP), as well as other parties of democratic structure in Moldova, were shocked at the position taken by the Moscow Parliament in respects to the results of the recent referendum organized in the Transnistrian region by the separatist authorities, stated Oleg Serebrian, leader of the Social Liberal Party in Moldova, at a press conference held on Wednesday, October11. “Despite the statements made earlier by different Russian officials, I doubted that Moscow would recognize the independence of the eastern zone of Moldova, fact that happened by conferring the legitimacy of this plebiscite by the State Duma of the Russian Federation”, Serebrian said. SLP leader asserted that this event will have unforeseeable repercussions at regional scale, for the CIS, as well as at international level, creating a serious precedent in the relations between states and especially the recognition of the independence of a part of the other state’s territory, without any juridical basis. SLP is more indignant at the lack of any reaction on the part of Chisinau, in a moment when Russia practically decides the destiny of Moldova and recognizes about 11% of its surface as being separated by the basic territory of the country, added Serebrian. “Moldovan authorities left at the mercy a partner from GUAM, Georgia. It wasn’t taken any attitude towards the Moscow’s position versus Georgia, hoping in this way for redemption, an example of docility in the relation with Russia, but today we are in Georgia’s situation”, said SLP leader. On October 6, the Russian State Duma recognized the results of the referendum in Transnistria regarding the region’s independence from Moldova and its adhering to Russia later. Three parties in the Russian Parliament asked to start the diplomatic procedure necessary for recognizing the independence of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic. The steps belong to the representatives of the nationalistic factions “Rodina” and to the Democratic Liberal Party of the ultranationalist Vladimir Jirinovski. Vice president of this forum, Serghei Baburin, announced he drew up a statement draft in this respect. Baburin’s proposal relies on the results of the Transnistrian referendum, organized on September 17, in the framework of which most of the region’s residents opted for the independence of the self-proclaimed Transnistrian republic and the unification with Russian later. For the time being, Chisinau didn’t officially react to these statements.
