During the last three months the Information and Security Service (SIS) has identified and neutralized 64 radioactive sources that have not been placed under legal control, IPN reports. The most recent case occurred on August 20, in Chisinau Airport area.
"SIS Antiterrorist Center officers, in collaboration with employees of the National Agency for the Regulation of Nuclear and Radiological Activities, have identified about 30 radioactive sources within obsolete devices, which considerably exceed the natural background radiation ", says an institution’s statement. As a result, the state representatives in this field informed the economic agent about the need to obtain the necessary authorizations, as well as the obligation to hand over the respective devices to "Special Objects" SI.
The SIS statement also maintains that the institution is carrying out actions that would lead to the identification of radioactive sources and materials which may harm national security, population or the environment. "The actions of the security officers are also aimed at avoiding the placement and use of these devices by international extremist-terrorist entities," the statement said.
