Sirbu and Ghimpu exchange tough words over procedure to select CAN director
Communist MP Sergiu Sirbu and Liberal Party leader Mihai Ghimpu exchanged vitriolic remarks during Wednesday’s meeting of the parliamentary commission on legal issues, appointments and immunities before the examination of the files of candidates for the post of director of the National Anticorruption Center (CNA). Sergiu Sirbu suggested that the contest was only a farce, Info-Prim Neo reports.
Sergiu Sirbu spoke to the commission head Victor Popa, a Liberal MP, claiming that he already knew who would get the job. The PL leader intervened: “This is a parliamentary commission! There is no place for political statements. I’m sorry you are so unprepared. If you know his name, go on and say it!”, said Ghimpu.
Independent expert Przemyslaw Musialkowski also attended the meeting. He delivered a speech to the MPs, speaking about international practices in electing anticorruption heads. Przemyslaw Musialkowski stressed that in all European countries, these officials were appointed after a contest.
On Wednesday, September 19, the parliamentarians from the commission on legal issues, appointments and immunities will examine the files of the 22 candidates for the CAN director’s office. The commission must present the selected candidate to the Parliament until October 1.
The first meetings of the Parliament in the fall-winter session are scheduled for September 27-28.
At the end of May, the Parliament adopted the Law on the reform of the Center for Fighting Economic Crimes and Corruption (CCCEC), which will be renamed into the National Anticorruption Center from October 1. The change of the procedure is determined by the fact that the head of an anticorruption agency should be protected from political fluctuations. The reformation of the CCCEC is part of Moldova's Action Plan on visa liberalization.
