Police report that the driver responsible for the accident resulting in the death of a child in Balti has a significant history of traffic violations. The man had six active penalty points and was previously involved in other traffic accidents, speeding, running red lights, and other infractions. This time, it was found that the driver was speeding excessively, driving under the influence, and ignored a red traffic light, IPN reports.
The 38-year-old man was driving his Porsche through Balti. According to the General Police Inspectorate (IGP), he passed a police patrol monitoring traffic just seconds before the crash, which attempted to intervene promptly.
"Due to the extremely high speed at which he was driving, officers were unable to stop him in time. Only 40 seconds passed between when the driver was spotted in traffic and the moment of the accident", stated a press release.
After ignoring a red traffic light, the Porsche collided with the side of a Toyota taxi that was traveling legally. The impact caused the Porsche to be thrown into a Mitsubishi. The accident led to the death of an 8-year-old girl, a passenger in the taxi. Her mother was transported to the hospital.
During investigations, it was revealed that the driver had a significant history of traffic violations, documented repeatedly by police. These included involvement in non-fatal road accidents, driving without insurance, failing to yield to pedestrians, speeding, disregarding traffic lights, and driving with tinted windows. At the time of the accident, he had six active penalty points. A driver’s license is suspended when the number of points reaches 15.
The driver, who was found to be heavily intoxicated, has been placed in preventive detention.
