The conduct of free, democratic elections in accordance with the international standards are the principal condition for a good relationship between the EU and Moldova, Siegfried Mureșan, who heads the European Parliament’s Delegation to the EU – Moldova Parliamentary Association Committee, stated in a news conference in Chisinau, being quoted by IPN.

Siegfried Mureșan noted he told the Moldovan authorities the expectation is that the snap parliamentary elections will be held in the best conditions for the Moldovans citizens everywhere to elect in appropriate conditions. The number of citizens of the Republic of Moldova abroad has increased and it’s clear that a higher number of polling stations than in the presidential elections should be now established.

The MEP said he and the members of the European Parliament want a legitimate legislative body with a transparent majority to be elected in the Republic of Moldova as a result of the snap elections and this should assist the Government in the implementation of the reforms expected by the citizens.

In another development, Siegfried Mureșan said Moldova received 300,000 vaccinate doses donated by Romania and the citizens of the Republic of Moldova should know that these vaccines were bought at the central level by the European Commission.

The MEP also said that in the first part of this year he saw that the trust enjoyed by President Maia Sandu leads to greater support on the part of the EU member states for the citizens of the Republic of Moldova. Moldova now has a President who is welcomed in all the European chancelleries and who during half a year took the country out of isolation. “The vaccines from Romania wouldn’t have been delivered to Chisinau so swiftly if the President of the Republic of Moldova hadn’t been permanently in touch with the President of Romania, the Prime Minister, the authorities and hadn’t enjoyed their trust”.

Acceding to Siegfried Mureșan, the main reforms expected by the European Parliament are those done in the justice sector. The faster these reforms are implemented, the swifter the €50 million in financial assistance that is provided by the EU to Moldova will become accessible. At European level, they are now working on a support package to help Moldova recover after the pandemic.
