Sic! What Mihai Ghimpu said about Moldovan nationality of Traian Basescu

The leader of the Liberal Party Mihai Ghimpu made a number of assertions in his characteristic style in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel, about the Union and his struggle for the Romanian cause, about the withdrawal of the Moldovan nationality of the former President of Romania Traian Basescu and others. The authors of a new article produced within the Sic! project chose to analyze several of the ”incendiary” comments made by the Liberal leader.

In the program on TVR Moldova, Mihai Ghimpu said the ex-President of Romania Traian Basescu does not need the nationality of the Republic of Moldova and he should better deal with the problems faced in Romania. According to Ghimpu, in the period when he was acting President, he told Traian Basescu he does not agree with the idea of nationality.

The authors of the Sic! article say it is known that Mihai Ghimpu held the post of Head of State on an interim basis during a year and three months, from September 2009 until December 2010. But Traian Basescu expressed his wish to apply for Moldovan nationality in 2013, after a visit he made to Chisinau.

On June 9, 2016, when Nicolae Timofti signed the decree to give Moldovan nationality to the ex-Romanian President and his wife, Mihai Ghimpu reacted with reserve, but not with disapproval: “I think we should all have Romanian nationality, but it is up to everyone to decide,” said then the Liberal leader. Moreover, according to the authors of the Sic! article, during the campaign that preceded last year’s presidential elections, an article signed by Mihai Ghimpu was published on the Liberal Party’s website on October 22, 2016. This was entitled “I want justice for Basescu and honor for the Bessarabians”, where the leader of the Liberals said he was in favor of Traian Basescu holding Moldovan nationality.

“So, when was Mihai Ghimpu sincere? In October 2016, when he said that Basescu has the right to obtain a Moldovan passport, or in January 2017, when he stated that this does not need the Moldovan nationality?” inquired the article authors.
