Shor family’s luxury villa in Russia was bought during “Theft of the Century”, RISE Moldova

The luxury villa of Ilan Shor's family in Russia, with an indoor pool, is located in an elite area near Moscow and was bought during the "Theft of the Century" scandal in Chisinau. Although his wife frequently posts images of the luxury property, Ilan Shor did not include it in the asset declarations, either as mayor or as an MP, IPN reports, with reference to an investigation conducted by RISE Moldova.

Integrity inspectors say that the former leader of the Shor Party did not declare a number of properties, but did not mention this mansion, where the youngest daughter of Dmitry Peskov, the spokesman for Russian President Vladimir Putin, makes videos for Instagram and TikTok, the investigation says.

The 38-year-old oligarch Ilan Shor since 2011 has been married to the Russian singer Sara Shor, 47, known on stage as Jasmin. Three years after the marriage, Ilan Shor became the owner of a villa in Chisinau, after he had bought it from a company he controlled. In the same year, in Moscow, his wife, Sara, appeared in a fashionable magazine talking about a new house, which they purchased in a "VIP village" near the Russian capital.

For years, the Shor family posted dozens of images and videos of the villa in Russia. When they uploaded them onto social media, they often avoided posting important details that could have made the house easier to locate.

"It took us some time to confirm that the address was different from the house we were looking for, being an older property, where Sara Shor previously lived with her ex-husband," RISE Moldova said in the investigation.

After more than three months of investigations thorough social media and satellite checks, in wooded areas and neighborhoods with limited access, the hidden villa of the Shor couple was discovered. The luxury property is located in Rozhdestvenno, Barvikha, one of the most expensive areas in Russia, known for the luxury residences of Russian elites, oligarchs and high-ranking officials.

In this exclusive area, where the Shor family owns the villa, real estate prices can reach 1 billion rubles (about $11.5 million).

Following the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Moscow Cadastral Agency no longer publishes data on property owners. The only official data available about this villa show that the last time the owner changed in April 2015, the house being located on a plot of 16 acres. However, evidence discovered in Russian institutions shows that, in 2014, the Shor family lived in this mansion.

The inspectors of the National Integrity Authority (NIA) checked the income and wealth of Ilan Shor and his family for 2015-2022, during which Shor served as mayor of Orhei and as an MP. Following the checks, the NIA said that it found large differences between the wealth owned by Shor, the declared income and the costs incurred by his family. It comes to millions of lei for which the inspectors did not find clear evidence of their origin.

At the end of last year, the NIA announced that Ilan Shor violated the law on the declaration of assets and personal interests, with a difference of over 10 million lei between the declared income and the acquired assets being found. The NIA sent the case to court and requested the confiscation of the unjustified wealth. However, in the NIA document, there is no express reference to the villa situated in Rozhdestvenno, Barvikha, RISE Moldova noted.
