Seven-month road death toll at 217
The 1,573 car accidents that happened in Moldova in the seven months to July resulted in 217 deaths and 1,991 persons injured. The number of accidents rose by 5% compared with the corresponding period last year. The data was presented at a roundtable meeting of the traffic police on Friday, Info-Prim Neo reports.
After the new Code of Administrative Offences came into force on May 31, the number of road accidents blamed on drivers decreased, but of those blamed on pedestrians grew, said Gheorghe Botnariuc, the head of the Interior Ministry’s Traffic Control Division.
As many as 21,620 offences were recorded in June and July. There were imposed 21,066 fines, 13,000 of which have been paid. Most of the fines were put for driving with the belt unfastened, not having insurance policy or technical overhaul certificate, etc.
