Disrupting gas supplies to the Transnistrian region would not simply be a crisis, but a humanitarian catastrophe, Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration Oleg Serebrian said. In the context of the talks with Russia's Gazprom about gas supplies to the Transnistrian region, Serebrian said that under no circumstances would scenarios be chosen that would harm Moldova's national and economic interests, IPN reports.

"It is not only the Transnistrian region, but also localities in the perimeter controlled by Chisinau, which may be affected by such a scenario. About 30 thousand inhabitants of the right bank are connected to the gas distribution network - Varnitsa, Copanca, practically the entire Dubasari district. But, above all, we are talking about the people living in the Transnistrian region, most of them citizens of the Republic of Moldova", the deputy prime minister said.

Moldova is already under economic pressure. The social situation has suffered for years after the Russian aggression in Ukraine and the disruption of the whole system of economic relations.

"Such a situation of disruption of gas supplies would not simply be a crisis, I dare to say that it would actually be a humanitarian catastrophe. This is because it would also lead to a collapse of the economic system of electricity supply, tens of thousands of families on the left and right banks of the Dniester would be affected", Oleg Serebrian said. This is something that any state should avoid.

Energy Minister Victor Parlicov met Gazprom Director Alexei Miller in St Petersburg on Monday. According to the Deputy Prime Minister for Reintegration, Minister Parlicov is scheduled to hold a press conference on Wednesday, November 27, to present information about the decisions and agreement reached during his visit to St. Petersburg.
