The administration of Moldova gave their condolences to the family of Dumitru Matcovschi. The obituary is signed by President Nicolae Timofti, Prime Minister Iurie Leanca, Head of Parliament Igor Corman, president of the Academy of Sciences of Moldova Gheorghe Duca and chairman of the Writers Union Arcadie Suceveanu, IPN reports.
Dumitru Matcovschi was born on October 20, 1939 in Vadul-Rascov village of Soroca county in a family of peasants. In 1961, he graduated from the Faculty of Philology of the State University of Moldova. She started work as editor at the newspaper “Socialist Moldova” in 1966 and worked there until 1970. He was deputy editor-in-chief of the weekly “Culture” and editor-in-chief of the magazine “Nistru” (Bessarabia).
He wrote over 40 volumes of poetry, prose, plays and articles. He made his debut as a poet with the plaquette “Poppy in the dew” in 1963. In six years he published the poetry volume “White and black enchantments” that was considered subversive and was banned by the Soviet authorities. Among his most famous plays are “The President”, “Lullaby for grandparents”,” Tree of life”, “Ion Voda the Courageous”, and “The Father”.
On May 17, 1989, Dumitru Matcovschi was involved in a serious road accident. After a long period of rehabilitation, he joined again the promoters of the national liberation ideas, fighting the totalitarian regime. Many of his verses were turned into songs that became very famous.
For special merits, in 1989 Dumitru Matcovschi was conferred the title of People’s Artist. The same year he became the laureate of the State Award of Moldova. In 1997 he was awarded the Poetry Prize “Nichita Stanescu”. He holds the medal “Mihai Eminescu” and is a citizen of honor of Chisinau municipality.
Dumitru Matcovschi passed away in the evening of June 26 after undergoing brain surgery. He was 73.
