The judges of the Supreme Court of Justice (SCJ) on January 31 will consider whether to accept the appeal filed by the lawyers for Ilan Shor against the Chisinau Court of Appeals’ decision to sentence the fugitive politician to 15 years in prison, IPN reports.
The meeting at the SCJ was set for 10:00 a.m. and is to be held without the participation of the parties in the case.
The acceptability of the appeal was due to be examined by the SCJ in mid-November 2023, but the examination was postponed in connection with the submission of a recusal request. On the court’s website it is said that the given request was rejected and the raising of the exception of unconstitutionality was refused.
In June 2017, Ilan Shor was sentenced to seven and a half years in prison for causing damage to the state through deception and breach of trust. The ordinary court’s decision was challenged at the Chisinau Court of Appeals, but the examination of the case was delayed. After the change of power in 2019, the politician fled the country. Even so, he entered Parliament again after the early elections of 2021, but in 2023 remained without the seat of MP after the legislature took note of the Chisinau Court of Appeals’ decision by which the politician was definitively sentenced to 15 years in prison.
By the Chisinau Court of Appeals’ decision of April 13, 2023, Ilan Shor was found guilty of fraud and money laundering committed in particularly large proportions by an organized criminal group. The appeals court also deprived him of the right to hold positions in the banking system for a period of five years and ordered to levy 5.2 billion lei on the politician. He also remained without his political party after the Constitutional Court declared the Shor Party unconstitutional.
After the Connotational Court’s decision, several parties that were said to have Ilan Shor behind them appeared on the political arena. It was also rumored that the fugitive politician finances these political parties and this fact was confirmed by the politician in the public sphere.
