The fact that Marina Tauber ended up on the U.S. sanctions list represents a very strong signal, thinks the political pundit Mihai Isac. This, according to him, will mean that everything that the lawmaker has done in recent years will be thoroughly checked by the American services.

The sanctions were announced on Friday by U.S. Ambassador Kent Logston. Tauber is targeted for facilitating attempts by the convicted oligarch Ilan Shor to subvert Moldova’s electoral processes on behalf of the Kremlin through illegal vote buying.

“These sanctions are also related to the elections that will be held in 2024 and 2025. It is a clear signal from the U.S.-EU geopolitical tandem that brazen violations of Moldova’s electoral legislation will not be tolerated. The fact that Marina Tauber ended up on the U.S. sanction lists is a very strong signal. Let’s not forget that both Marina Tauber and Ilan Shor entertained the Western media with stories about acts of corruption. The two were accused in various journalistic investigations of undermining the constitutional order. The fact that the U.S. explicitly identifies this person as being involved in acts of subverting the constitutional order also serves as a signal for Russia that the U.S. supports the authorities of Moldova”, Mihai Isac said during a program on Radio Moldova.

According to Mihai Isac, the sanctions involve both a ban on traveling to the U.S. and a prohibition on doing business with any U.S. and EU entities.

“Ilan Shor’s ability to constantly diversify ways of funding illegal protest movements and pro-Russian propaganda indicates the complicity of a state entity such as the Russian Federation. Because one man cannot accomplish such a feat alone. Usually, those who find themselves on such lists should expect much greater scrutiny from special services in EU and U.S. jurisdictions. Clearly, Marina Tauber will no longer be able to travel to the U.S., but at the same time, the American tax authority, the FBI, the CIA and such are going to investigate all the activities and life of Marina Tauber. Also, her appearance on this list will make banks in other jurisdictions as well reconsider working with her”, said Mihai Isac.

Reacting to the sanctions in Facebook post, MP Marina Tauber denounced the measure as “a direct U.S. interference in the internal affairs of the Republic of Moldova”.
