Anatol Șalaru, secretary general of the National Unity Party (PUN), provided details about the negotiations held by their party with the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR) on participation in elections on a common electoral platform. Șalaru said the offer made by AUR was rejected because they do not want to be identified with a party that in Romania is considered anti-European and with evident pro-Russian sympathies.

According to Șalaru, PUN offered those from AUR to register an electoral bloc consisting of a number of unionist parties. But their proposal was rejected for the reason that AUR wants to monopolize the unionist segment in the Republic of Moldova.

“Our proposal was to form an electoral bloc consisting of the PUN, AUR, PL and USB. They told us openly that their goal was to enter the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova and to have 15 MPs. The first ten places on their list were offered to us and other parties on condition that we run under the emblem of AUR,” Anatol Șalaru stated in the talk show “Emphasis on Today” on TVR Moldova channel.

“Their goal is not to change something in politics on the Byk. They aim to improve their ratings in polls in Romania. They told us that while sitting in the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova, they estimate they will gain 8%-10% in Romania,” said Anatol Șalaru.

According to him, PUN does not want its image to be associated with a controversial party that has pro-Russian views. “We cannot allow at the start of our path to be identified with an anti-European, anti-vaccine party with evident pro-Russian sympathies. Senator [Diana] Șoșoacă apologized to Russia for Romania’s behavior. In such conditions, we consider it is better to run alone,” noted the PUN secretary general.

Three unionist parties so far combined forces with AUR Moldova that is led by Vlad Biletski, namely Save Bessarabia Union, the Romania People’s Party and the Liberal Party.
