The 15% increase in the salaries of workers of the public healthcare system came into force on January 1, 2025. The increase varies between 700 and 3,000 lei, depending on the specialty, seniority and level of studies. Doctors, nurses and medical assistants will benefit from higher salaries, and the expenses for paying salaries to the medical will total 1.34 billion lei annually, IPN reports.
For example, a family doctor with a seniority of 10 to 20 years will receive by 2,300 lei more and will get a monthly salary of 18,170 lei. Ambulance doctors, with over 10 years of experience, will collect 14,790 lei per month, by 1,930 lei more than previously. Also, medical specialists, such as surgeons, anesthesiologists and intensivists, will receive by 2,300 lei more or a salary of 17,810 lei.
Auxiliary staff in hospitals will also get pay raises. Medical assistants with more than 10 years of experience will earn 10,750 lei per month, up 1,400 lei compared to last year. Nurses will benefit from an increase of 900 lei, reaching a salary of 5,750 lei.
The ambulance service employees and staff working in risky conditions or in night shifts will also be paid more. For example, ambulance doctors will benefit from an additional pay of 140 lei for each night shift worked, thus reaching an increase of 1,060 lei for a night shift. In the same situation, anesthesiologists and reanimatologists in hospitals will receive a bonus of 1,320 lei for a night shift, up 170 lei compared to last year.
The pay raises are supported by a budget of mandatory health insurance funds for 2025, approved by Parliament, with revenues and expenses projected at approximately 17.39 billion lei, an increase of 12.8% on last year. According to the Ministry of Health, the funds will also be directed to improve access to medical services and compensate particular medicines, medical devices and palliative care services.
In this connection, the Ministry of Health stressed that "increasing the salaries of medical staff is essential to support the healthcare system and ensure a quality service for all citizens". The salary increases are also part of a larger project that aims to improve working conditions and attract professionals to the health sector, which in recent years has experienced a shortage of workers due to low pays and difficult working conditions.”
Also, from January 1, 2025, the employees of the institutions managed by the Ministry of Health - the National Public Health Agency and the Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices - will benefit from a 10% increase in salaries.
A total of 1.343 billion lei will be annually needed for the salaries of public healthcare system workers, as the Ministry of Health estimated. These funds will be used not only to pay the salary increases, but also to improve the quality of medical services provided to the population.
