The National Union of Wine and Spirits Producers and Distributors from the Russian Federation (SUAR) makes efforts to bring back high quality Moldovan wines on the Russian market. According to SUAR’s web page, the problem of resuming imports of Moldovan quality wine is utterly important “for the internal consumer, accustomed to Moldovan wines; for shaping a proper consumption structure in light of assuring the consumption of low alcohol beverages, especially of natural wines; for the numerous Russian companies dealing with imports of wines and spirits, which set up their 15-year-lasting businesses due to the imported Moldovan wine.” Within the frameworks of the intergovernmental Moldovan-Russian Commission, held at the beginning of October, Chisinau hosted representatives of SUAR, who presented to the leaders of “Moldova-Vin” State Agency a concept which embody real mechanisms of resuming exports of high quality wine, specifically, actions of improving control over the quality of production. SUAR says its proposal was accepted and assumes that the concept might become a ground for drawing up a mechanism intended to resume exports, first of all, via companies with Russian capital. The ban on Moldovan wines dates from March 27, 2006. The Russian Federal Sanitary Service ordered back then to exterminate all Moldovan and Georgian stocks of wines and spirits from Moscow’s stores and storehouses. Russian authorities claimed their alleged noxiousness. Analysts, in turn, considered the issue to be of political nature, intended to “punish” Chisinau and Tbilisi for their closer ties with the West.
