The Alliance for European Integration broke the law when it set the date of the general local elections for June 5, Speaker Marian Lupu, the leader of the Democratic Party, confessed in a program on Publika TV on Thursday evening, Info-Prim Neo reports. According to the Head of Parliament, the current Election Code says the terms in office of the mayors and local councilors expire four years after the validation date. Thus, some of the mayors and councilors whose seats were validated several months later than of the others will not be able to complete their missions. The Communist parliamentary group warned about this in the March 31 sitting of the legislative body. Earlier, the electoral legislation said that the terms in office expire the day the new elections are held. However, Marian Lupu assured that the mistake will be corrected. On Friday, April 1, the legislature will examine a relevant bill. “We will amend the Election Code and reinclude the old provisions that were clearer from juridical viewpoint,” he stated. The MPs come together for a meeting at 12 noon on Friday.
