NATO feels the need of a new approach as to the supply with armed forces and the ability of the allies to use these forces, the Romanian Defense Minister, Teodor Melescanu, said in a live interview at the end of the working dinner on Wednesday evening, April 2, Info-Prim Neo’s correspondent accredited at the NATO summit reports from Bucharest. “Obviously there is a big difference between the number of troops of the North-Atlantic Alliance and its ability to deploy those troops for military actions under NATO’s aegis, including the operation in Afghanistan”, the minister said. According to him, at the dinner of the Defense Ministers, they talked about the NATO members’ intentions to enhance the military presence in Afghanistan, not only by raising the number of military, but also by increasing the endowment. The participants showed their interest to focus more on security problems, on offering the Afghanis the opportunity to take over more responsibilities, on developing areas able to sustain themselves economically. The need for a closer cooperation with the EU to avoid doubling the activities related to security was also emphasized. These and other topics will most probably be presented at the summit beginning in the morning of April 3.
