Romanian Film Days in 10 Moldovan cities

The Romanian Film Days will take place in Chisinau from Thursday, September 26, to Sunday, September 29. The films will be shown at the Cineplex Loteanu cinema and at the Academy of Music, Theater and Visual Arts (AMTAP). The event is financed by the Department for Relations with the Republic of Moldova.

Admission is free to all films, with those interested only needing to take a zero-value ticket from the Cineplex Loteanu cashier.

During the tenth edition of the Romanian Film Days, moviegoers will be treated to the most successful new films, classic films, a book launch and masterclasses. The special guest of the event is the well-known director Cristi Puiu, celebrated in the Focus section, who will present the films “Goods and money” (2001), “Death of Mr. Lăzărescu” (2005) and "MMXX" (Romania-Moldova, 2023).

The “New films” section brings to Chisinau the multi-awarded feature films “Three kilometers to the end of the world”, “Familiar”, “The New Year that Did Not Happen”, “Great Week”, as well as Moldova-Romania collaborations - "Warboy” and the short film “Black House”. The guests of this section are director and actor Emanuel Pârvu, directors Bogdan Mureşanu, Marian Crişan and Dumitru Grosei, and actress Nicoleta Lefter.

The Retro section, will celebrate the 1970s Generation by screening its three most important films: the collective documentary “Apa ca un bivol negru” (1971) and the fiction films “Stone Wedding” (1971) and “Duhul aurului” (1974), both made in tandem by Mircea Veroiu and Dan Piţa.

Children are also invited to the movies to watch the classic film “De-aş fi... Harap Alb” (1965), directed by Ion Popescu Gopo.

In partnership with Cărtureşti Libraries, the Romanian Film Days will organize the launch of an influential cinema book, recently translated into Romanian by Vellant and UNATC Press, called  “Film History. An Introduction” (Volume I), by Kristin Thompson, David Bordwell, and Jeff Smith. The special guest of the event, which will take place at Cărtureşti Muzeu bookstore, will be the university lecturer and film critic Andrei Rus, the translation coordinator.

Andrei Rus will also be present at AMTAP, where he will introduce a selection of student short films from the 1990s, recently digitized as part of the “Active Archive” project, which he initiated within UNATC Bucharest, and will talk about curatorship, archives and film critic. Students and all those interested will be able to participate in a masterclass on sound in filmmaking, which will be held by the well-known sound engineer Mihai Bogos.

For the tenth edition, the Romanian Film Days will be present in ten cities of Moldova. Apart from Chisinau, there will be also screenings in Hâncești (September 26), Nisporeni (September 27), Călărași (September 28), Orhei (September 29), Ungheni (October 3), Florești (October 4), Bălți (5- October 6), Căușeni (October 10) and Cahul (October 12-13).

In the other nine cities, moviegoers will be able to watch “Warboy” (Romania-Moldova, 2023), directed by Marian Crişan, and the children’s film “De-aş fi... Harap Alb” (1965), directed by Ion Popescu Gopo. In Bălţi and Cahul, the program also includes the film “The Death of Mr. Lăzărescu” (2005), directed by Cristi Puiu.

The Romanian Film Days is an event organized by the Moldovan Association of Independent Filmmakers “Alternative Cinema” and the Romanian production house Rova Film.
