The main competition for the post of mayor of Chisinau will be between the current mayor Dorin Chirtoaca and the Party of Socialists’ candidate Zinaida Grecheanyi, considers economist and expert of the Black Sea University Foundation Petrisor Peiu. He made such a statement in the program “European Horizon” on TVR Moldova channel, IPN reports.

Though he said that the list of candidates for the mayoralty of Chisinau does not stop at these two, Peiu considers that Chirtoaca and Grecheanyi will become the favorites of the voters in Chisinau, with Chirtoaca being given precedence. “I think the Socialists do not really count on the success of their candidate. Zinaida Greaceanyi is a present for Chirtoaca, who has won two terms so far owing to his personality, not because of the image of the party of which he forms part,” said Peiu.

Contacted by phone, Moldovan journalist Vitalie Calugareanu said he partially supports Peiu’s hypothesis, but does not rule out the possibility of surprises in the June 14 local elections. “Such personages as Renato Usatyi, who enjoyed massive support in last autumn’s election campaign, may become involved in the coming election campaign. Former mayor Serafim Urechean could also take part in the race in Chisinau and would be supported by the Liberal Democratic Party. A lot depends on the financial resources of the candidates.  Businessman Nicolae Cheornyi may also decide to become involved,” he stated.
