On november 24, presidential elections will take place in Romania. Romanian citizens, including Moldovans with Romanian citizenship, will choose from 14 candidates. The list includes leaders of political parties in Romania as well as independent candidates with experience in high-level political positions, reports HotNews, IPN reports.
The list of candidates for the Romanian presidency comprises 10 supported by political parties and 4 independents.
First on the list is Elena Lasconi, the candidate from the Save Romania Union. A journalist by profession, she currently serves as the mayor of Campulung Muscel.
Second on the ballot is George Simion, representing the Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR). He is the founder of the 2012 Action Unionist Platform, advocating for the unification of Romania with Moldova, and is currently a member of the Romanian Parliament.
Romania’s current Prime Minister, Marcel Ciolacu, is running for president on behalf of the Social Democratic Party (PSD). Third on the ballot, Ciolacu has previously served as a local councilor in Buzău, a county councilor, deputy mayor, parliamentarian, and president of the Chamber of Deputies.
The President of the Romanian Senate, Nicolae Ciuca, is also a presidential candidate, representing the National Liberal Party (PNL). Fourth on the ballot, Ciuca is a former Prime Minister of Romania and has also held the position of Minister of Defense.
Fifth on the ballot is Hunor Kelemen from the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (UDMR). A former Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Kelemen is currently a member of the Romanian Parliament's Chamber of Deputies.
Former NATO Deputy Secretary-General Mircea Geoana is running as an independent candidate and is sixth on the ballot. Geoană has previously been a parliamentarian, President of the Senate, leader of PSD, and Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Independent candidate Ana Birchall, an attorney, is seventh on the ballot. Birchall has previously served as Minister of Justice and Deputy Prime Minister for Implementing Romania’s Strategic Partnerships.
TV presenter Alexandra-Beatrice Bertalan-Pacuraru is running for the presidency as the candidate of the Alternative for National Dignity (ADN). She is eighth on the ballot.
Sebastian-Constantin Popescu, representing the New Romania Party, is ninth. Currently, he works as an administrator for ExclusiveNews.
Former Prime Minister Ludovic Orban is the candidate of Forța Dreptei (Right Force), a party he leads. Orban is tenth on the ballot.
Independent candidate Calin Georgescu is eleventh. He is an international consultant on environmental protection and an associate professor at the University of Pitesti.
Twelfth on the ballot is independent Cristian Diaconescu, a former judge and ex-Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs. He is currently a member of the Eminent Group of CTBTO within the UN and a professor of international law. He is also the President of the Respect for Romania platform.
Thirteenth is Cristian-Vasile Terhes, representing the Romanian National Conservative Party. Previously a priest in the Greek-Catholic Diocese of Oradea and the Romanian Catholic Mission in California, he is currently an AUR Member of the European Parliament.
Last on the ballot is Silviu Predoiu, the candidate of the National Action League Party. Predoiu is a former officer of the External Intelligence Center under the Communist-era Securitate, and has served as the First Deputy Director and interim Director of Romania’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SIE).
For the Romanian presidential elections on november 24, 59 polling stations will be open in Moldova. These stations will also serve for the Senate and Chamber of Deputies elections on December 1.
