Romania seeks German support for Moldova's bid to join EU
Romania's President Traian Basescu urged his German counterpart, Horst Koehler, to support Moldova's inclusion in the next enlargement wave of the European Union.
According to the Romanian President’s Office, following the meeting of the 2 presidents, Basescu said he requested his German counterpart to consider while discussing a new enlargement draft, in particular for the Western Balkans, the possibility of “getting Germany's support for Moldova's inclusion in the next group of EU acceding countries”.
The Romanian President said the talks were also focused on other aspects of common interest, such as the situation in the Western Balkans, the Black Sea issue, and the European neighbourhood policy.
Romania's President has previously made statements in support of Moldova's European path. On the other hand, the Chisinau leadership, including President Vladimir Voronin, called on numerous occasions these statements interference in Moldova's internal affairs.
