Romania opens 14 polling stations in Moldova for impeachment referendum

14 polling stations will be available to Moldovans holding Romanian citizenship on July 29 when Romania holds a referendum on the dismissal of currently suspended President Traian Basescu. Initially, the Romanian Ministry of External Affairs (MAE) planned for 150 polling stations for Romanians who reside abroad, but after recalculation the number of stations doubled, reaching 301. In Moldova there are 14 stations, after the Romanian MAE opened other 9 in cities Chisinau, Causeni, Hincesti, Ialoveni, Cantemir, Orhei, Soroca, Nisporeni and Calarasi. Press attaché of the Romanian Embassy in Chisinau George Scarlat told Info-Prim Neo that the polling stations’ locations will be announced soon. Moldovans holding Romanian citizenship will also be able to vote in other locations opened for the diaspora, in countries like Italy, Spain, USA, France, Great Britain, Austria, Israel, and others. Romanian authorities bothered to open several polling stations on the Black Sea shore, so that people who are on vacation can also vote. On July 29, Romanians are called to vote upon the dismissal of President Traian Basescu. On July 6, the reunited Romanian Parliament chambers decided, through anonymous voting, to suspend the activity of President Traian Basescu. A total of 256 MPs voted for his suspension. Another motion to dismiss Basescu was initiated in 2007, on account of his breaches to the Constitution. As a result of the 19 May 2007 referendum, his suspension was terminated, 74.48% of participants having voted against his dismissal.
