Robert Schwartz, editor-in-chief of the Deutsche Welle service for Romania and Moldova, thinks the result achieved by the PAS candidate in the presidential elections is a very important political signal for the future parliamentary elections. The German journalist told IPN that Maia Sandu, whom he considers a beneficial political personage for the Republic of Moldova, has chances in the legislative elections and he hopes she will have strength to fight a hard struggle for the Republic of Moldova.

Robert Schwartz said that in time he had contacts with different political players of Moldova and it seemed to him that each of these had the solution. Regrettably, they didn’t have it and not only because they didn’t have strength, but also because they often faced opposition and were lumped together with persons with a really stained reputation.

“I think the stolen US$1 billion brought particular clarity. It was seen that at official, political level, from the Government down or up, all kinds of steps were taken to hide the real situation,” stated Robert Schwartz.

According to the journalist, the appearance of the leader of the Platform “Dignity and Truth” Andrei Nastase and the leader of the Party “Action and Solidary” Maia Sandu on the political arena brought a glimmer of hope to the voters who often felt betrayed by governments of different colors.

Robert Schwartz said that after the first round of elections, he drew a parallel with the events that happened in Romania in 2014 and expected that Moldova will witness a similar phenomenon, but wasn’t sure of a repeat of the clear result seen in Romania, where the second-ranked candidate surprisingly won by 10 percentage points more than the top candidate.

“I was yet glad that Maia Sandu polled almost 48%. It is an extremely important political signal for the future parliamentary elections, no matter when these are held,” stated the journalist.

Asked to comment on the election results, Robert Schwartz said the pro-European politicians entered ‘on horseback, but, unfortunately, disappointed one by one. They were helped by all the voters to understand that they are to blame for what is going on and it is an exaggeration, but they didn’t find the necessary instruments to keep the status of ‘model student’ in the Eastern Partnership and the disappointment is very great.

Robert Schwartz also said that beyond the election outcome, as the politicians come and leave – are elected withdraw or are withdrawn – the phenomenon that becomes more evident in Moldova is that the young people leave in a large number and this phenomenon pulls the country down.
