A powerful storm that swept through the northern part Moldova Tuesday afternoon left roads blocked in the city of Balti because of downed trees and caused significant damages in Briceni’s Larga commune.
Daria Neceaeva, spokesperson for the Emergencies Inspectorate, told IPN that multiple power lines were also downed in Balti, and trees that fell on gas pipes needed to be lifted to avoid leaks. Trees also damaged balconies on apartment blocks.
Two teams have been set up to monitor the situation and remove the debris, said Neceaeva.
The storm also affected localities in the districts of Glodeni, Sângerei, and Briceni.
Radu Urechean, mayor of Larga commune in Briceni, told IPN the storm destroyed roofs and windows and damaged crops over extended areas. “Tomorrow morning two commissions will be created to assess the damages, one for the buildings and the other one for the crops,” said Urechean.
Meanwhile, because of the bad weather the Customs Service is advising the public against using the following customs checkpoints: Grimăncăuți-Vashkivtsi (crossborder), Briceni-Rossoshani, Larga-Kelmentsi, Cosăuți-Tsekinovka, Ocnița (internal) and Briceni (internal). The power outages make it impossible to use the information systems required for the formalities, the Customs Service explained.
