Road accident in Gagauzia. GPI chief pleads for periodic medical checkups for drivers

The head of the General Police Inspectorate (GPI) Viorel Cernăuțeanu, in the talk show “Resumé” on Rlive TV channel, commented on the recent road accident in Ceadâr-Lunga district, in which a child was fatally hit by a 74-year-old driver. Cernăuțeanu stressed the need to amend the legislation to introduce mandatory periodic medical checkups for drivers, IPN reports.

"The man who committed the road accident lost control of the steering wheel. In my opinion, from a particular age there should be a medical checkup to see the driving skills," stated Viorel Cernăuțeanu.

He noted that it is not right to issue driving licenses for a period of 10 years. If a 60-year-old person obtains a license for another 10 years, his/her state of health cannot be checked during this period.

"I said it for several times. The driving license should not be granted for the lifetime, as previously, or even for 10 years. If a citizen is 60-70 years old and they get a license for another 10 years, we don't see how their health can be checked later," said Cernăuțeanu.

A problem is also the deficient infrastructure. The child was walking on the roadway, not on the sidewalk. "In addition, there is bad infrastructure in that area. The child was struck close to the roadside. There was no lane or sidewalk there," stated Cernăuțeanu.

The girl who was hit fatally on her way to school in Baurci village was 11 years old and was the only child of the family.
