Resignation or death of local elected officials led to snap elections in several settlements

Citizens from several settlements were called to the ballot boxes to elect their mayors and local councilors even though local elections were validated in 2015. According to Rodica Sîrbu, press officer of the Central Election Commission, six snap elections were held in Moldova.

"After the local elections of 2015, for reasons related to resignations or deaths of local officials, other polls were organized in which 25 mayors and local council members were elected into office in two local councils. The two councils are Lingura, Cantemir district, and Coșernița, Criuleni district”, said Rodica Sîrbu.

The CEC press officer added that all the local officials - the mayors of villages, communes, cities and all councilors elected in 2015, shall fulfill their duties until the validation by the court of the next local election cycle on October 20, 2019.

The are 898 mayor’s offices in Moldova. "During the following days, the CEC will issue a decision that will determine the number of counselors. This will be different from the 2015 elections, because the National Bureau of Statistics official data on the population number of Moldova is different” said Rodica Sîrbu. Depending on the population of each settlement, CEC will establish a certain number of councilors.
